UMBC Women’s Lacrosse Takes on California in Home-Opener

BALTIMORE – UMBC women’s lacrosse hosts California on Saturday, Feb. 23 in its 2013 home-opener. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at the UMBC Stadium. All the action can be seen live on UMBCRetrievers.tv.

The Retrievers (1-0) return home after picking up a 15-12 victory – UMBC’s fourth win to start a campaign in the last five years – in its season-opener last Saturday. Midfielders Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J./Voorhees) and Alyssa Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State) tallied four goals apiece, while Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) registered three goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist. Sophomore attack Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) also added four points in the victory, tabbing two goals and two assists.

Senior netminder Kendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made five stops in the contest and ranked second on the team in ground balls with two.      

Cal (0-1) dropped its season-opener, 11-5, to James Madison on Thursday night at University Park. The Golden Bears trailed the Dukes, 3-2, at the half, but California was outscored 8-3 in the second period. Five different Golden Bears scored in the loss. Junior midfielder Paige Gasparino led with a goal and an assist. Senior attack Megan Takacs, the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year, recorded a team-high nine shots and three groundballs against JMU. Junior goalkeeper Megan McGinnis registered eight stops in the loss.
