No. 9/10 Women’s Lacrosse to Face No. 6/10 Loyola Saturday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; February 22, 2013 – After dispatching Bucknell by an 18-2 margin in its season opener, the No. 9/10 Penn State women’s lacrosse team will return to action Saturday, Feb. 23 when it visits No. 6/10 Loyola for a top-10 matchup in Baltimore, Md. Opening draw at Ridley Athletic Complex is set at 11 a.m.

Live video and audio, as well as live stats, of Saturday morning’s game will be available through LoyolaGreyhounds.com.

Penn State (1-0), which defeated three top-10 teams in 2012, will enter the contest after a dominating performance against the Bison. The Nittany Lions, who also topped Bucknell by a 16-goal margin last season, opened the affair scoring the game’s first 13 markers.

Junior Mackenzie Cyr (Westminster, Md.) led the attack with a seven-point performance and, dating back to last season, has notched at least one point in the past eight games.

Several Nittany Lions made an immediate impact in their first appearances in the blue and white. Freshman midfielder Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) netted three goals, while Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) added two points (1g, 1a) and Ally Heavens (Garnet Valley, Pa.) tallied a free-position marker. Goalkeeper Emi Smith (Denver, Colo.) played the first half and stopped all five shots on goal.

Senior Katie Guy (Whitby, Ont.) shined on the defensive end against the Bison as she led all players with seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. Sophomore midfielder Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.), who was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, and junior midfielder Shannon Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.) paced the squad with four draw controls each.

Loyola (0-1) will enter the matchup following a 10-9 loss to No. 8 Virginia. Redshirt sophomore Taryn VanThof paced the team with three goals against the Cavaliers, while Molly Wolf made 11 saves. Penn State will look to snap its two-game skid against the Greyhounds after falling to Loyola, 12-10, in overtime last season.

Following the game, the Nittany Lions will continue their season-long three-game road trip when they visit Duquesne Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
