WomensLax.com Player of the Week: Shannon Mangini, Penn
Junior midfielder leads Penn’s dramatic run to 7th-straight Ivy League Championship
Penn’s junior midfielder, Shannon Mangini, clinches her second WomensLax.com Player of the week honor, after two impressive and clutch performances over the weekend, leading the Quakers to two overtime victories and an outright Ivy League regular season Championship. Both overtime wins; both epitomized high pressure conference games, with multiple lead changes and plenty of action; both ended in overtime victories for the Quakers --- 10-9 vs. #17 Princeton and 10-7 vs. Brown. Against Princeton, Mangini notched a hat trick, to include the game tying goal to force overtime, and the game winner with 2:10 remaining in OT. The victory ensured a share of the Ivy League Title, extended Penn’s nation-best consecutive conference championship streak, and tied Harvard’s longest run of Ivy League titles (1987-93). On Sunday, Mangini notched 4 points (3g,1a), 4 ground balls, and 2 caused turnovers to lead the Quakers past Brown. Again forcing overtime, the junior scored with 30 seconds left in regulation to keep Penn alive, and another in overtime to secure the victory. Penn (9-4, 7-0) earned the right to host the Ivy League Tournament, but will first travel to Evanston to battle Northwestern on Saturday April 27th at 1 PM CST.
