Taylor Thornton : Northwestern
Freshman leads Northwestern defense in overtime victory over 4th-ranked Virginia
Northwestern's freshman defender, Taylor Thornton, receives her first WomensLax.com Rookie of the Week honor, for her defensive contribution in Northwestern's thrilling victory over 4th-ranked Virginia Friday night. The freshman picked up 4 ground balls, 2 draw controls, and a team-leading 3 caused turnovers in a very close match-up between two of the nation’s top teams. Northwestern trailed Virginia 7-8 with 7:30 to play when the game was called for nearly an hour due to weather. When play resumed, Thornton and the Wildcat defense were able to hold the Virginia attack at bay for the remainder of the 2nd half and score the game-tying goal to force overtime. Northwestern ultimately came out on top, 11-8. Thornton has been a mainstay on the Wildcat defense this season, starting all 16 games and making an immediate impact in her freshman campaign with 27 ground balls, 20 draw controls, and a team-leading 24 caused turnovers. Thornton hails from Dallas, TX where she was twice named the Texas Player of the Year. The Wildcats head into the American Lacrosse Conference Tournament this weekend with a first-round bye.
