Shannon Smith : Northwestern
Freshman attacker paces Wildcats to 6th-straight American Lacrosse Conference Championship
Northwestern's freshman attacker, Shannon Smith, receives her second WomensLax.com Rookie of the Week award, after an impressive showing at the 2009 ALC Tournament. Smith notched a goal, 2 ground balls, and 3 draw controls in the semifinal game vs. Vanderbilt and tied a career-best with 4 goals in the Wildcats’ 13-3 Championship victory over #15 Penn State. All of Smith's goals came in a critical first half, as Penn State took a 1-0 lead before the freshman tallied four-straight goals to give the Wildcats a 4-1 margin leading into halftime. Smith was named to the ALC All-Tournament team in her first postseason tournament and has made a significant impact on the Wildcats' attack this season, notching 35 points (30g, 5a) thus far in her freshman campaign. After a perfect 19-0 regular season, Northwestern received the overall number one seed in the 2009 NCAA Tournament as announced last night. Smith and the Wildcats begin their quest for a 5th-straight National Championship this weekend when they host Massachusetts in the first round of the Tournament at Lakeside Field.
