With all of the events that have transpired over the past few months, it is important to find things to feel positive about. Sometimes evil, tragic, and heart-wrenching stories and events have the capacity to alter our sense of reality, and certainly remove us from our daily routines. Here at WomensLax.com, we are focused on women’s lacrosse; we love sports and we celebrate their greatness. Even our close-knit circle was rocked by tragedy this year, with the awful circumstances surrounding the Seton Hill Women’s Lacrosse Team, and the entire lacrosse community.

However, every day, if you look hard enough, things happen to make you realize just how much good there is in this world; people are kind, and compassionate, and care for each other. We rise up together, rally the troops, and unite to help in any way we can. This brings me to a young high school student athlete named Christine Kelly.

When Hurricane Sandy struck the east coast, it was clear that outside help was essential to the survival of so many homes, businesses, and schools which were underwater.  Shortly thereafter, the email below came across my desk:

“Dear Mr. Blake Schierer,

My name is Chrissy Kelly. I am a junior and play lacrosse for Farmingdale High School, in New York. My team has come together in hopes of helping one of our local high school teams. The Long Beach community has sustained extensive damage due to Superstorm Sandy. Long Beach High School was damaged by floodwaters of two to six feet. Everything at this level and below has been destroyed and must be replaced. Long Beach Public Schools Athletic Department lost most of its team uniforms, equipment and supplies in the damage to their schools caused by Hurricane Sandy. The Athletic Department supports over seventy teams at the varsity, junior varsity and middle school levels. I have a deep passion for lacrosse and want to help make a difference and reach out to the Long Beach girls with a similar passion.

Recently, after viewing the News12 segment on the Long Beach Football team and how the Boomer Esiason Foundation donated all new equipment to the team, I began to think about how I can help the girls’ lacrosse team. After reaching out to the athletic director of Long Beach High School, Arnold Epstein, we asked what does the team need. He was extremely appreciative of the generous support offered by the Farmingdale Lady Dalers. He said the girls would take anything new or used.

In order to continue these programs we are soliciting your support. Your generous support to help us rebuild is greatly appreciated. Even after our insurance and FEMA and NY State reimbursements, rebuilding costs are expected to be in the millions of dollars…”

We happened to have an extra load of numbered “WomensLax.com Long Island” pinnies, ironically in Long Beach school colors, and it occurred to us that they would be the perfect thing to contribute. Expensive to replace, and essential to lax practice!

We were incredibly impressed by Chrissy’s desire and determination to help her peers, and do what she could to support a neighboring team who had lost so much. We continue to celebrate the power of sports and their ability to bring people together for good. The Farmingdale Lady Dalers are an inspiration, and the perfect example of the greatness of sports. Our hat goes off to you Chrissy, and to your Farmingdale teammates. Thank you for letting WomensLax.com play a small role in your great deed.
