Trojans Close Home Schedule With Oregon and Stanford

April 17, 2014
FROM PRESS RELEASES: LOS ANGELES - It’s crunch time for the Women of Troy (7-6, 5-2 MPSF) who need to win one of two final home games to secure a spot in the MPSF tournament. The USC lacrosse team hosts Oregon (8-5, 4-1) at McAlister Field on Friday, April 18, at 4 p.m. PT and will complete regular-season home and league schedules with a contest against defending league champ Stanford (11-2, 5-1) at the LA Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, April 20, at 1 p.m. PT. Sunday’s game is also USC’s Senior Day. The Trojans will honor Ceilidh Meagher in pre-game ceremonies. The Trojan-Cardinal showdown will be carried live to a national audience by the Pac-12 Networks with Jason Knapp and Kara Lentz on the broadcast. The Women of Troy opened their inaugural season in the Coliseum as hosts to then-defending NCAA champion Northwestern. The Trojans lost, 18-5, in the historic first-ever lacrosse game to be played in the venerable building. USC and Northwestern will make history again as the teams play the first-ever lacrosse game in Wrigley Field in Chicago on April 26.The Trojans can guarantee themselves the fifth seed in the MPSF tournament with a win this weekend. USC was picked to finish third in a preseason poll of the league’s coaches. In 2013, in their inaugural season, the Women of Troy were selected to finish in seventh place but shocked prognosticators with a fourth-place finish on the final day of the regular season to claim a spot in the MPSF tournament.USC hit a rough patch on its most recent set of road games. The Trojans had their four-game winning streak snapped in a last-second 12-11 loss to Colorado in Boulder, Colo., then couldn’t overcome the stall put in place by a 20th-ranked Denver as they fell, 8-7, on a snowy Denver Sunday. Despite the losses, USC is still in place to contend for a share of the regular-season title but will need help from other teams in the league.Sophomore Caroline de Lyra leads the Trojans with 34 points this season on 21 goals and 13 assists. A trio of freshmen provide much of USCs firepower led by midfielder Alex Moore who has 25 goals and six assists. Annie Ruland has 19 goals and five assists while midfielder Michaela Michael has 20 goals and five assists. Michael is also second on the team with 35 draw controls. Sophomore midfielder Amanda Johansen tops all players with 40 draw controls and has contributed 16 goals this season to go with 17 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.Defensively, sophomore netminder Liz Shaeffer leads the team with 34 ground balls. In the field, sophomore Courtney Tarleton has 16 ground balls and a team-high 13 caused turnovers. Freshman defender Nina Kelty has 15 ground balls to go with eight caused turnovers. Senior Elizabeth Eddy also has 15 ground balls to go with four caused turnovers.TRACK THE TROJANS: Fans of USC women’s lacrosse can follow the Trojans on Twitter. For a behind-the-scenes look at the program, scores, and news updates, follow @USCTrojansLax. All of USC’s home games at McAlister Field will be webcast on USCTrojans.com via the Pac-12 Networks web portal.SENIOR DAY: USC will hold its first-ever Senior Day Ceremonies when it faces conference rival Stanford in the LA Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, April 20. In just its second year as a varsity program, the Trojans will graduate one senior: Ceilidh Meagher. As a junior, Meagher appeared in started 11 and appeared in 17 of USC’s 18 games. She had two goals and an assist to go with eight ground balls, nine draw controls and five caused turnovers. This season, Meagher has appeared in five games and picked up an assist, three draw controls, and caused a turnover.SCOUTING REPORT: OREGON (8-5, 4-1 MPSF) has won four of its last five games and lost only to a 12th-ranked Stanford team, 15-7, on April 11. The Ducks lead the league with 14.08 goals per game and have four players with 23 goals or more this season. Nikki Puszcz leads the team with 31 goals and 19 caused turnovers, and is second with 28 draw controls, and second with 22 ground balls. Oregon also leads the MPSF in ground balls (17.85 gbpg) thanks in part to goaltender Caroline Federighi who has 25. Federighi also tops all MPSF netminders with a 7.84 goals-against average. Carly O’Connell leads the way with 60 draw controls (4.62 dcpg, 2nd MPSF) and has 24 goals and 29 assists for 53 points. Shannon Propst leads the league with 60 points (4.62 ppg) on 24 goals and 36 assists.SCOUTING REPORT: STANFORD (11-2, 5-1 MPSF) has won three straight conference games and last lost to MPSF leader Denver on April 4, 13-12. The Cardinal’s only other loss was a 16-15 overtime decision to Vanderbilt, but Stanford has also won a pair of one-goal games in overtime periods. The Cardinal is the defending MPSF tournament champion after taking out the Pioneers last season. Stanford ranks near the top in nearly every statistical category among MPSF teams. Hannah Farr has scored four game-winning goals and leads the Cardinal with 23 this season. Megan Lerner leads Stanford with 28 ground balls (2.33 gbpg, 3rd MPSF) and 17 caused turnovers. Goalie Lyndsey Munoz has 27 ground balls.LAST TIME OUT: The Trojans had a four-game winning streak snapped in a visit to the Rocky Mountains. In a heartbreaking overtime finish, USC dropped a 12-11 decision to Colorado in Boulder, Colo. Alex Moore had three goals and an assist, Liz Shaeffer produced 14 saves, and Nina Kelty picked up a career-high four ground balls, but the Trojans couldn’t escape the Buffalo stampede as the first-year program fought their way to a big conference victory. In a low-scoring defensive affair, USC and Denver went into the half tied at four, but the Trojans took a 6-5 lead halfway through the second half before the Pioneers ripped off a big 3-0 run to claim an 8-6 advantage. The Trojans scored once more with under five minutes to play, but Denver implanted an effective stall to secure an 8-7 win in Mile High City amidst falling snow and rain. Moore and Michaela Michael each scored two while Amanda Johansen had three draw controls and caused three turnovers, but it wasn’t enough as the Pioneers won their 11th straight game.IN CONTROL: Sophomore midfielder Amanda Johansen set a new MPSF single-game record with her 13 draw controls in a 19-1 win over Fresno State on April 20, 2013. She was just two shy of tying the NCAA mark of 15 held by Allie Emala of Virginia Tech (March 14, 2009). Johansen has reached double-digit draw controls in a single game twice in her career. She had 10 against Presbyterian (Feb. 15). She later set a new single-season mark with 100 at the close of 2013 and now has 140 draw controls in her career.WELL GROUNDED: Sophomore defender Courtney Tarleton leads the Trojans with 13 caused turnovers this season and is second on the squad with 16 ground balls. She was a first-team All-MPSF selection as a freshman when she ranked second in the league for ground balls (40, 2.22 gbpg) and caused turnovers (32, 1.78 ctpg). Tarleton was also nationally ranked at 21st for caused turnovers in 2013.ROCKIN’ ROOKIES: USC’s freshman class was rated the 10th-best class by Inside Lacrosse. From coast to coast, the incoming Women of Troy represent four different states. The Trojans welcome four freshmen, each, from New Jersey and California, three from New York, and a pair from Georgia. Among USC’s recruits is the nation’s 24th-rated prospect: midfielder Alex Moore (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown HS). The Trojans also landed three players who were named to the Inside Lacrosse watch list including midfielder Michaela Michael (Hillsborough, Calif./Menlo School), midfielder Shannon Nugent (Medford, N.J./Shawnee HS), and attacker Annie Ruland (Milton, Ga./Milton HS). USC’s incoming class includes state champions, all-time record holders, team captains, all-league, all-conference, all-state selections, and most stunningly 24 US Lacrosse First Team All-America selections.STARS AND STRIPES: Head coach Lindsey Munday and assistant coach Devon Wills were each members of the U.S. women’s national team that won a record seventh world title at the 2013 FIL World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario. Both players were members of the 2009 squad that also won the cup. Munday served as the team captain in 2013.DOUBLE AGENT: Senior midfield Elizabeth Eddy is also a four-time letterwinner on USC’s women’s soccer team. The Trojans’ leading scorer in 2013, she was selected on Jan. 17 by Sky Blue FC in the 2014 National Women's Soccer League draft as the 33rd overall pick. Eddy had six goals in her senior season and finished her soccer career with 16 goals and nine assists. She started 69 games out of her 76 appearances and scored three game-winning goals. She stands at No. 10 all-time in career goals scored, and earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, 2010 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team, and 2013 Pac-12 Player of the Week. Eddy’s father Park Eddy played water polo for USC and was a member of the U.S. national team. She is also the great granddaughter of Arnold Eddy, a head administrator for USC athletics in the 1930’s and 40’s.ANCHORS AWEIGH: Sophomore midfielder Jacky Hennegan aspires to become an engineer in the U.S. Navy and is currently an active member of USC’s NROTC program.UNDER INVESTIGATION: Sophomore goalie Liz Shaeffer has her eyes set on one day becoming an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She is currently majoring in sociology and is also an avid fan of television crime dramas.TONGUE TWISTER PARTY: Senior midfield Ceilidh Meagher’s name might strike fear (or confusion) into most people’s hearts when it comes to pronouncing it. It’s really not as difficult as it looks, though. Ceilidh is Gaelic for “party” and is pronounced “kay-lee”. Her last name is one syllable, pronounced “marr”.LEGGY MY EGGY: Sophomore midfield Alexandra Plastaras acquired a unique nickname when she was a baby. Born to a father with Greek roots, and a Korean mother, she was affectionately called Eggy by her mother. Eggy (sometimes spelled “eggi”) means “baby” in Korean.TWIN KEYS: The USC roster has a pair of twins on it, but you would never be able to tell by looking. Glade and Shannon Nugent were born together on Dec. 21, 1994, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Charles and Connie Nugent. The two Women of Troy are fraternal twins. The pair of freshmen from Shawnee HS (Medford, N.J.) are pieces of USC’s top 10 recruiting class of 2013.LAXIN’ FOR CHANGE: Assistant coach Hilary Bowen is the Women’s Program Representative for an organization called Fields of Growth International that aims to harness the passion of the lacrosse community into positive social impact through global leadership development, service, and by growing the game. In the summer of 2012, Bowen joined the organization in Uganda for a special summer mission. Visit her blog Laxin4Change.blogspot.com to learn more about her, and the organization’s mission.BEACH BUMS: The USC coaching staff has truly soaked up all that is Southern California life. Strap on your rollerblades or hop on your bike and you might just run into them on The Strand (a bike path that runs along LA’s trio of South Bay beach cities). Head coach Lindsey Munday lives in Manhattan Beach, assistant coach Devon Wills is just down the street in Hermosa Beach, while assistant coach Hilary Bowen and director of operations Regan Bosch are just a stone’s throw away in Redondo Beach.

CU Lacrosse Continues MPSF Play Against UC Davis

April 3, 2014
FROM PRESS RELEASES: QUICKLY: With its first ever Mountain Pacific Sports Federation home victory under its belt, the University of Colorado looks to continue the trend as it heads to California. The Buffaloes (5-5, 2-1 MPSF) open the month of April with conference match-ups against UC Davis and No. 8 Stanford. SCOUTING THE UC DAVIS AGGIES: With a 6-4 overall, 1-2 MPSF record, the Aggies hold the nation’s 34th best win percentage. The six wins match the Aggies’ 2013 win total. UC Davis began the season on a 5-0 winning streak, including an overtime victory over Siena and a conference win over California. Since their hot start, the Aggies have lost four of their last five, with all but their most recent defeat coming by five or more goals. Last week, the Aggies bounced back with a resounding 13-2 win at Detroit, but lost a 13-12 sudden victory thriller at Michigan. Despite their recent setbacks, the Aggies have fallen just once at home this season. UC Davis remains in the nation’s top 50 in multiple categories. Their 129 draw controls rank 26th, 170 ground balls rank 37th (with Carly Voris and Mary Doyle both ranking in top 45 with 26 and 25 ground balls, respectively) and their 147 points round out the top 42. Junior midfielder Elizabeth Landry is the team’s standout, with 29 goals, 41 points and 42 draw controls, all of which rank in the nation’s top 30. Landry also leads the Aggies with 65 shots and ties a team-high 12 assists. Eight other Aggies have scored, with Voris, Melissa Kellan and Ellie Delich each netting goals in the double digits. Lead goalie Kai Murphy holds a 6-1 record. She ranks in the country’s top 17 in save percentage (.509) and goals-against average (8.02).MPSF: Conference opponents Colorado and UC Davis are fairly evenly matched in many categories, with CU just edging UCD in goals, assists, points, ground balls, shots and saves per game. Though the Aggies are stronger on the draw (averaging 12.90 draw controls per game to CU’s 11.80) and cause more turnovers, they also lead the conference in fouls and average 2.30 more turnovers per game than the Buffs.LAST TIME OUT: Behind a program-high number of goals, CU swiftly defeated the St. Mary’s Gaels 19-5 at Kittredge Field in the Buffs’ inaugural MPSF home game. With freshmen Cali Castagnola and Amelia Brown leading the way, with four goals apiece, the Buffs dominated nearly every stat line. CU outshot St. Mary’s 33 to 16, including an astounding 22-9 in the first half. The Buffs scooped up 23 ground balls to SMC’s eight, limiting the Gaels to just one second half ground ball. The Buffs have now had four games with at least 20 ground balls. Colorado was strong on the defensive end, with goalies Paige Soenksen and Sophia Gambitsky combining for seven total saves. CU was also a perfect 18 for 18 in clears. Colorado had much better control of the ball than it has in some of its previous outings, recording just 14 fouls and turning the ball over 13 times. Saint Mary’s, who leads the conference in turnovers, but also leads the nation in caused turnovers, gave the ball up 21 times (a game-high for a CU opponent) and caused just two of CU’s errors.SMASHING RECORDS: The Buffs continue to break records in their inaugural season, with Kittredge Field serving as a strong proving ground. CU’s 14 goal win was their biggest margin of victory to date. CU was commanding on the attack, taking a record 33 shots (besting the previous high of 29 versus Temple on March 4 at Kitt), while holding St. Mary’s to 16, the second least of a Colorado opponent this season. CU’s 19 total goals are also a program record, as are the 14 in the first half. The Buffs have scored 10 goals in a single half in two previous games, in the first half versus MSPF opponent Fresno State and in the second against Temple. The Buffs also demolished their previous record in assists, grabbing 13 on the day, including an amazing single-game record of seven by Katie Macleay. The seven points are also a single game-high. With 19 goals and 13 assists, CU also set a record for points with 32. Additionally, Marie Moore had a single-game record of eight draw controls. FIRST: CU’s season of firsts continues, with March 28 serving as both the Buffs’ first MPSF home game and win. Defender Maddie DeWinter and midfielder Claire McCain each netted their first collegiate goals in the 19-5 victory over St. Mary’s.ATTACK, ATTACK: The Buffs had relied on second half comebacks in their three previous games, but a late run wasn’t necessary against St. Mary’s. Taking a 14-2 lead into halftime, the Buffs did continue one trend, holding their opponent to five or fewer second half goals for the fourth straight game. Seeing their five-game scoring streaks come to an end against Brown, Cali Castagnola and Sarah Lautman each bounced back against SMC, combining for six goals. Behind a resurgent attack, CU ranks in the nation’s top 51 in ground balls per game, draw controls, points, scoring offense, scoring margin and win percentage. MACLEAY AN ASSISTING MACHINE: With Katie Macleay leading the way, the Buffs had a record 13 assists against St. Mary’s. Macleay contributed seven, marking CU single-game records for both assists and points. The seven assists also tie for fourth most in MPSF history and are the second most this season (behind Oregon’s Shannon Propst nine assist performance at Stetson on February 10). Macleay leads the Buffs this season with 11 assists, nearly breaking Johnna Fusco’s previous season best of nine in a single game. Macleay also ranks fourth on the team with 20 points and fifth with 14 ground balls. AMELIA BEDELIA HELPS OUT: Amelia Brown had a career performance against St. Mary’s, netting four goals, smashing her previous bests of one in three straight games against Temple, Fresno State and UMass. Brown was a perfect 4 for 4 in shooting and also scooped up a ground ball.GOING BACK TO CALI: Cali Castagnola continues to be a standout in her freshman season. After seeing her five-game scoring streak put to bed against Brown, Castagnola came back with a vengeance against St. Mary’s, having her fourth game with at least four goals. She leads the team with 25 goals and 31 points, while her six assists and seven caused turnovers rank third. SCORING MOORE GOALS: Marie Moore began the season on a six-game scoring streak. Though she was iced out on the Buffs’ East Coast swing, she has recorded back-to-back hat tricks since returning to Boulder. Moore and Castagnola are the only Buffs to have five games with at least three goals. In addition to her three goals against St. Mary’s, Moore also had a program-high eight draw controls, while scooping up three ground balls and causing two turnovers. Moore ranks 35th in the nation and first on the team with 37 total draw controls. THE FUSCO, THE PROUD: Johnna Fusco is an emerging leader for the Buffs, pacing the team with 47 shots and ranking second with 29 points, 20 goals, nine assists and 27 draw controls. Her 23 ground balls rank 40th in the country. Fusco has scored in all but one of her nine games played, scoring two or more goals in eight games. Fusco has earned two Rookie of the Week titles, first after scoring five goals and adding four assists to open the season against Stetson and Jacksonville, and most recently for scoring four goals in CU’s late 8-1 run against Brown. In just 30 minutes played against St. Mary’s, Fusco netted two goals and scooped up three ground balls. SUNNY ONE SO TRUE: Paige Soenksen looks forward to returning to her “sunny” home state this weekend. As CU’s lead goalie, Soenksen continues to shine as one of the nation’s best shot blockers. She ranks in the top 20 in saves (91), saves per game (9.10) and save percentage (.476). She holds an 11.45 goals-against average, allowing 100 goals from the 246 shots she’s faced.  NEXT UP: The Buffs conclude their MPSF road trip at No. 8 Stanford, taking on the reigning MPSF tournament champions on Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. MT. CU-Stanford will air on the Pac-12 Regional Networks.

Tribe Lax to Host Louisville on Sunday at Noon

February 21, 2014
From Press Releases WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Feb. 21, 2014)—The William and Mary lacrosse team will return to action this weekend when it hosts Louisville on Sunday at noon.Live video of the contest, which will include audio commentary by Kyle Rae, will be available at TribeAthletics.com. Live stats will also be available at TribeAthletics.com.Scouting the TribeW&M was edged by No 5 Duke, 11-8, in its season opener last Sunday afternoon. In addition to earning a 12-9 advantage in draw controls, W&M was balanced offensively as six different players combined for the College’s eight goals. Seniors Jenna Dougherty and Taelor Salmon both recorded two goals apiece, while Bridget Brown, Alexi Farmakis, MC Curran and Shannon Quinn also found the back of the cage. Junior Ellen Shaffrey also came up big with a game-high five draw controls, while senior goalie Colleen Nofi posted nine saves.Scouting the CardinalsAfter falling at No. 5 Duke, 14-11, in its season opener on Feb. 9, Louisville bounced back with an 18-1 victory against Detroit last Sunday. A key to the Cardinals success has been their ability to win the draw, as they own a 32-17 advantage in the category this season. Individually, Nikki Boltja was recently honored as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after totaling a team-high 10 points (8g, 2a) in the opening week’s two contests. Kaylin Morissette (6g, 1a) and Faye Brust (5g, 2a) also came up big with seven points apiece, while Morissette also recorded a team-high 16 draw controls.News and NotesW&M-Louisville All-Time SeriesSunday’s contest will mark the first ever meeting between W&M and Louisville. The Cardinals are in their seventh year as a varsity program, as they began fielding a team in 2008.Versus the BIG EASTW&M owns a 7-14 all-time record versus teams currently in the BIG EAST. W&M controls the all-time series against Connecticut (1-0), Rutgers (3-0) and Villanova (1-0), while it has losing records against Georgetown (1-12) and Temple (1-2).Tough to Beat at HomeSince the start of the 2008 season, W&M has been tough to beat at home and owns a 31-22 record in Williamsburg.Winning the DrawW&M posted an impressive performance on the draws in the season opener against No. 5 Duke, as it won the statistical category, 12-9. Junior Ellen Shaffrey provided much of that production with five draw controls, while senior Taelor Salmon added three.First StartsA trio of W&M freshman earned starts in their collegiate debuts in the season opener versus No. 5 Duke, as Lindsey Jenks, Abby Junior and Julia McGrath all garnered spots in the starting lineup. Junior contributed a ground ball, draw control and caused turnover, while Jenks added a ground ball. Two other Tribe freshmen also saw the field for the first time, as Shannon Quinn and MC Curran both tallied goals off the bench.Preseason HonorSenior midfielder Taelor Salmon was recently selected to the Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association Team. Having established herself as one of the league’s top players during the past few seasons, Salmon has totaled 80 points (64g, 16a) during the last two years. As a junior last spring, the Fort Washington, Md., native ranked second on the team in points (38), seventh in the CAA in points per game (2.2) and posted a .504 shooting percentage. The former CAA Rookie of the Year also recorded an outstanding sophomore campaign in 2012 when she led the Tribe with 42 points (31g, 11a) and ranked ninth in the league in points per game (2.47).Preseason PollIn addition to releasing preseason all-conference honors, the CAA announced its preseason predicted order of finish as selected by the league’s six head coaches. W&M was chosen to finish sixth. Towson was picked to finish first and was followed by James Madison, Hofstra, Delaware, Drexel and W&M.New Era of Tribe LacrosseFirst-year head coach Hillary Fratzke is currently in her first season directing the Tribe, as she recently became the eighth head coach in W&M’s 44-year varsity history. A proven winner as both a coach and player, Fratzke assumed the head coaching duties this summer after spending the past three seasons at Northwestern where she helped the Wildcats win two NCAA titles and post a 61-7 overall record. The former three-time All-American is also very familiar with the CAA, as she was honored as the league’s player of the year twice during her standout playing career at Towson en route to helping the Tigers advance to the NCAA Tournament three times.Challenging ScheduleAs is the case every season, the Tribe will once again challenge itself against some of the nation’s top teams this spring. The 16-game slate features four games against teams that competed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, including a pair of opponents that advanced to the national quarterfinals – Maryland and Duke. Four of the Tribe’s opponents were nationally ranked in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaching Association (IWLCA) preseason poll.Looking for a Home Field AdvantageIn addition to hosting the 2014 CAA Championship on May 2 and 4, the College’s regular-season slate includes 10 home games, which equals the most in program history. The Tribe will host six of its first seven games at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field this spring. Additionally, W&M will close out the regular season slate with three consecutive home contests.Tradition of SuccessW&M will look to build upon a tradition of success this spring, as it will aim for its fifth double-digit win campaign in the past seven seasons.CaptainsW&M will be led by a quartet of captains this season – Maggie Bermingham, Hannah Clarke, Colleen Nofi and Ellen Shaffrey. All four players are outstanding leaders and have made significant contributions on and off the field throughout their careers.

Sophomore Kerrin Maurer leads Duke offensively with 11 points (5g, 6a), while senior Makenzie Hommel has recorded eight points on five goals and three assists. Junior Maddie Salamone is coming off a nine-draw control effort versus Virginia Tech and leads the Blue Devils with 12 through the opening two games. The Tribe claimed the first three meetings, but Duke currently owns a 13-game winning streak in series. Last MeetingThe teams last met in W&M's season opener last spring, as the fifth-ranked Blue Devils earned an 18-9 victory at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Playing in cold and rainy conditions, the contest was tightly contested early before DU pulled away with a 12-2 run that covered the end of the first half and the beginning of the second. Maggie Anderson led the Tribe with four points (3g, 1a), while Taelor Salmon and Katie Stillwell both tallied a pair of goals apiece. Last Meeting in DurhamIn the last meeting in Durham, W&M outscored fourth-ranked Duke by four goals in the second half but fell to the Blue Devils, 14-11, in the 2011 season opener. Despite trailing, 10-3, at halftime, the Tribe utilized a pair of 3-0 runs in the second half and held the Blue Devils to just one goal in the final 20 minutes to rally back. Maggie Anderson totaled a career-high six goals, just two shy of the school record, while Ashley Holofcener nearly equaled a single-game school record with a career-best five assists to go with a goal.     Versus the Atlantic Coast ConferenceW&M owns a 35-66-1 record versus teams currently in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tribe controls the all-time series against Boston College (1-0), North Carolina (3-1) and Virginia Tech (5-1), while Duke (13-3), Maryland (6-22) and Virginia (17-29-1) own advantages against W&M. Last Time OutW&M opened the 2013 season with a 17-3 victory against American at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Wednesday afternoon. Playing in cold and rainy conditions, the Tribe utilized a 6-1 run early in the second half to break the game open and maintained a comfortable lead for much of the final 22 minutes. A trio of Tribe standouts led the team with five points apiece, as junior Taelor Salmon (4g, 1a), sophomore Ellen Shaffrey (4g, 1a) and sophomore Kaleigh Noon (1g, 4a) all provided significant production. Shaffrey recorded her four goals on just five shots, while her stat line also included four draw controls. Senior Katie Stillwell registered a pair of goals and a team-high five draw controls, while senior Kyrstin Mackrides tallied four points (3g, 1a). Defeating a Ranked TeamWhen W&M takes on No. 7 Duke this Sunday, it will be looking for its first win against a nationally ranked team since the 2010 season opener when it defeated No. 16 Ohio State in Williamsburg. Season OpenersWith its win against American, W&M improved its all-time record in season openers to 34-9-1. Additionally, the victory was the Tribe's ninth home-opening win in the last 10 seasons and improved the program's record to 27-7 in home openers since 1980. Closing in on the Top 10Senior attacker Kyrstin Mackrides is closing in on a pair of W&M's all-time top-10 lists, as she has totaled 116 career points and 92 career goals. Both of those figures currently rank tied for 23rd on theTribe's all-time list. Preseason HonorsSenior attacker Kyrstin Mackrides and senior midfielder Katie Stillwell were chosen as preseason honorable mention all-conference selections by a vote of the league's head coaches. A second-team all-conference selection in 2012, Mackrides led the Tribe with 32 goals last spring while ranking ninth in the CAA with 1.88 goals per game. En route to ranking third on the squad with 36 points as a junior, the Newtown Square, Pa., native also posted nine multi-goal games and six hat tricks. Stillwell was also a second-team All-CAA honoree last spring and returns for her senior season as one of the league's top midfielders. The Chantilly, Va., native recorded 15 points on 12 goals and three assists in 2012, while posting a .545 shooting percentage. Additionally, Stillwell totaled 20 ground balls, 21 draw controls and five caused turnovers. Preseason PollIn addition to releasing preseason all-conference honors, the CAA announced its preseason predicted order of finish as selected by the league's eight head coaches. W&M was chosen to finish sixth. Towson was picked to finish first and was followed by James Madison, Drexel, Delaware, Hofstra, W&M, Old Dominion and George Mason. Returning ProductionLed by senior attacker Kyrstin Mackrides and junior attacker Taelor Salmon, the Tribe returns seven of its top eight scorers from last season. Salmon posted a team-high 42 points (31g, 11a) last spring while Mackrides recorded 36 points (32g, 4a). Sophomore attacker Kaleigh Noon was also a key contributor and totaled 34 points (20g, 14a) during her rookie campaign. Challenging ScheduleAs is the case every season, the Tribe will once again challenge itself against some of the nation's top teams this spring. The 16-game slate features four games against teams that competed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, while five opponents are nationally ranked in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaching Association (IWLCA) preseason poll. Close ContestsAlthough W&M was unable to extend its streak of 10-win seasons last spring, many of its losses were very narrow defeats. In all, five of its losses came by two goals or less - including a 9-7 decision at then-No. 9 Penn State. CaptainsW&M is led by a trio of senior captains this season - Brett Hayes, Caitlin Murphy and Katie Stillwell. All three players are outstanding leaders and have made significant contributions on and off the field throughout their careers.
