WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Feb. 15, 2013)-After earning a season-opening victory against American on Wednesday, the William and Mary lacrosse team will return to action when it plays at No. 7 Duke on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Live stats and live video will be available at GoDuke.com.
Scouting the Tribe
Playing in cold and rainy conditions, W&M opened the 2013 season with a 17-13 victory against American at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Tribe utilized a 6-1 run early in the second half to break the contest open and maintained a comfortable lead for much of the final 22 minutes. A trio of Tribe standouts led the team with five points apiece, as junior Taelor Salmon (4g, 1a), sophomore Ellen Shaffrey (4g, 1a) and sophomore Kaleigh Noon (1g, 4a) all provided significant production.
Scouting the Blue Devils
Ranked seventh nationally, Duke currently owns a 2-0 record after opening its season with wins against Virginia Tech and Presbyterian. In those wins, DU outscored the opposition by a combined total of 40-9. The Blue Devils will host Richmond on Friday afternoon before closing out its four-game season-opening home stand against W&M on Sunday. Sophomore Kerrin Maurer leads Duke offensively with 11 points (5g, 6a), while senior Makenzie Hommel has recorded eight points on five goals and three assists. Junior Maddie Salamone is coming off a nine-draw control effort versus Virginia Tech and leads the Blue Devils with 12 through the opening two games.
News and Notes
W&M-Duke All-Time Series
W&M and Duke have met in all but one season dating back to 1996, as the Blue Devils control the all-time series, 13-3. The Tribe claimed the first three meetings, but Duke currently owns a 13-game winning streak in series.
Last Meeting
The teams last met in W&M's season opener last spring, as the fifth-ranked Blue Devils earned an 18-9 victory at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. Playing in cold and rainy conditions, the contest was tightly contested early before DU pulled away with a 12-2 run that covered the end of the first half and the beginning of the second. Maggie Anderson led the Tribe with four points (3g, 1a), while Taelor Salmon and Katie Stillwell both tallied a pair of goals apiece.
Last Meeting in Durham
In the last meeting in Durham, W&M outscored fourth-ranked Duke by four goals in the second half but fell to the Blue Devils, 14-11, in the 2011 season opener. Despite trailing, 10-3, at halftime, the Tribe utilized a pair of 3-0 runs in the second half and held the Blue Devils to just one goal in the final 20 minutes to rally back. Maggie Anderson totaled a career-high six goals, just two shy of the school record, while Ashley Holofcener nearly equaled a single-game school record with a career-best five assists to go with a goal.
Versus the Atlantic Coast Conference
W&M owns a 35-66-1 record versus teams currently in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tribe controls the all-time series against Boston College (1-0), North Carolina (3-1) and Virginia Tech (5-1), while Duke (13-3), Maryland (6-22) and Virginia (17-29-1) own advantages against W&M.
Last Time Out
W&M opened the 2013 season with a 17-3 victory against American at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Wednesday afternoon. Playing in cold and rainy conditions, the Tribe utilized a 6-1 run early in the second half to break the game open and maintained a comfortable lead for much of the final 22 minutes. A trio of Tribe standouts led the team with five points apiece, as junior Taelor Salmon (4g, 1a), sophomore Ellen Shaffrey (4g, 1a) and sophomore Kaleigh Noon (1g, 4a) all provided significant production. Shaffrey recorded her four goals on just five shots, while her stat line also included four draw controls. Senior Katie Stillwell registered a pair of goals and a team-high five draw controls, while senior Kyrstin Mackrides tallied four points (3g, 1a).
Defeating a Ranked Team
When W&M takes on No. 7 Duke this Sunday, it will be looking for its first win against a nationally ranked team since the 2010 season opener when it defeated No. 16 Ohio State in Williamsburg.
Season Openers
With its win against American, W&M improved its all-time record in season openers to 34-9-1. Additionally, the victory was the Tribe's ninth home-opening win in the last 10 seasons and improved the program's record to 27-7 in home openers since 1980.
Closing in on the Top 10
Senior attacker Kyrstin Mackrides is closing in on a pair of W&M's all-time top-10 lists, as she has totaled 116 career points and 92 career goals. Both of those figures currently rank tied for 23rd on the
Tribe's all-time list.
Preseason Honors
Senior attacker Kyrstin Mackrides and senior midfielder Katie Stillwell were chosen as preseason honorable mention all-conference selections by a vote of the league's head coaches. A second-team all-conference selection in 2012, Mackrides led the Tribe with 32 goals last spring while ranking ninth in the CAA with 1.88 goals per game. En route to ranking third on the squad with 36 points as a junior, the Newtown Square, Pa., native also posted nine multi-goal games and six hat tricks. Stillwell was also a second-team All-CAA honoree last spring and returns for her senior season as one of the league's top midfielders. The Chantilly, Va., native recorded 15 points on 12 goals and three assists in 2012, while posting a .545 shooting percentage. Additionally, Stillwell totaled 20 ground balls, 21 draw controls and five caused turnovers.
Preseason Poll
In addition to releasing preseason all-conference honors, the CAA announced its preseason predicted order of finish as selected by the league's eight head coaches. W&M was chosen to finish sixth. Towson was picked to finish first and was followed by James Madison, Drexel, Delaware, Hofstra, W&M, Old Dominion and George Mason.
Returning Production
Led by senior attacker Kyrstin Mackrides and junior attacker Taelor Salmon, the Tribe returns seven of its top eight scorers from last season. Salmon posted a team-high 42 points (31g, 11a) last spring while Mackrides recorded 36 points (32g, 4a). Sophomore attacker Kaleigh Noon was also a key contributor and totaled 34 points (20g, 14a) during her rookie campaign.
Challenging Schedule
As is the case every season, the Tribe will once again challenge itself against some of the nation's top teams this spring. The 16-game slate features four games against teams that competed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, while five opponents are nationally ranked in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaching Association (IWLCA) preseason poll.
Close Contests
Although W&M was unable to extend its streak of 10-win seasons last spring, many of its losses were very narrow defeats. In all, five of its losses came by two goals or less - including a 9-7 decision at then-No. 9 Penn State.
Captains
W&M is led by a trio of senior captains this season - Brett Hayes, Caitlin Murphy and Katie Stillwell. All three players are outstanding leaders and have made significant contributions on and off the field throughout their careers.
